The Bank of New York Building has one of the most unique and iconic facades of the Financial district. A masterpiece from architect Ralph Walker’s portfolio of New York Art Deco buildings and a truly definitive example of 1930s New York style, One Wall Street presented Skyline with one of its most interesting opportunities.
The original steel double hung windows at One Wall were a New York original. Each window was composed of three lites of glass in both the top and bottom sash that were splayed 7 ½ degrees between each lite.
The architects for the project, Wiss, Janney, Elstner Associates, had been told by several national window manufacturers that it wouldn’t be possible to replicate them using modern materials. Skyline was asked to restore the original single pane steel windows on a tight timeline.
Using components of our high performing Series 100 Double Hung combined with corner key technology, the Skyline team set out to build the window that ownership desired and that One Wall Street deserves.
Within two weeks the first opening prototype was fabricated, splayed in plan double hung window that met all standard test criteria and still tilted in for cleaning.
Working with WJE, the prototype was refined into a high performing, multi-pane, insulated and thermally broken double hung window completely custom to the One Wall Street project. As you walk up lower Broadway the sun glints off the splayed lites of glass, accenting the sheer limestone and steel façade of this striking New York icon.
